Tournament Rules

The tournament will be setup on a double elimination bracket, with the winner of the winning bracket and losing bracketing facing off in a championship game. If the winner of the winning bracket loses against the loser bracket champion, the teams will play again.

Each game will be a maximum of 5-minutes. At the end of the 5-minutes, the team with the most number of players remaining wins the game.

If the 5-minutes ends and there are equal number of players remaining on the court from each team, one player for each team will enter into a sudden death match of 1-minute. This sudden death match will dissolve the centerline, seeing players use the entire dodgeball court.

The court will be setup with two sides, a neutral area where the balls start the game, and a player return zone.

This will be a primarily self-refereed game and players will honor the rules. However, two referees will serve as line, contact, ball-timer, and tie-breaker judges.

There are 6 balls, split into 2 even groups near the ends of the centerline. During the opening rush (when the game starts), you may only grab the balls to your right.

You are out if: 1) you step on or over a sideline or centerline; 2) a thrown live ball hits your body; and 3) you throw a live ball and it is caught by an opponent. However, direct headshot will not count as an out.

A thrown live ball can only hit out 1 player.  Thrown balls that hit the ground, the wall, other balls, or other objects before hitting the opponent are considered dead balls, and are ineligible to hit players out.

You may block a thrown ball with a held ball. However, if you drop the blocking ball during the act of blocking, or if you fail to make a clean block (as in the thrown ball still ends up hitting or grazing your body afterwards), you are out.

If you are out, line up in the return zone.  If your teammate catches a ball, the player at the start of your team’s return zone line comes back into play after touching the back wall. The teammate must be in the line at the time of the catch to be eligible to be brought back in.

Since the tournament will be held on a basketball court, your team has the chance to return all outed players. If an active member of the teams throws the dodge ball through the opposing team’s basketball goal, your team can enter the game from the return zone.

You can only hold a ball for 5 seconds, afterwards, it will be considered dead. Dead balls need to be rolled over immediately to the other team.

Substitutions must be made prior to the start of the game. No substitutions can be made during a game, except in cases of injury.

Have fun, shake hands, make friends and be spirited!

Please don’t come with an attitude to relive the glory days.
